Place the nails on the base of the step flashing piece so you re nailing into the deck. This way you can take the thing apart each year to clean it without all that nasty furnace cement falling out onto the floor. Square step flashing to fit 1 1 2 in. If it is just a hair line crack the best thing to do is put rubber caulking on it.

Use a silicone based caulk in any gaps between the flashing and the surface of the chimney or in the corners of the flashing to create a water proof seal. With a caulking gun squeeze a small bead along the crack.

Embed the corner step flashing in the caulk and nail it to the roof with two roofing nails. If you re using wet surface formulas work the cement thoroughly into the surface around. Apply a jelly bean size dollop of caulk at the corner where the chimney meets the roof. There are times when someone will go overboard and pour a cement slab the makes a statement.

Also place the nails high so the next course of shingles will cover them. Once the kick flashing and first piece of step flashing are secure you have to apply a shingle. Spread a thin layer of tar around the base of the chimney using a plastic trowel taking care to seal around the edges of the flashing and the adjacent roofing.
