It needs to be between inch and inch thick and you should use the trowel to work it firmly into the netting. Step 1 attach a metal lath as a base. I ve seen house fires where the vinyl siding burned off only to reveal the superior asbestos shingles underneath which saved the house. Applying stucco over your existing wood siding is a great way to cover up wood that is looking old and worn or simply to give your home a new look. Follow with the three dimensional drainage mat and two more layers of paper or felt. Secure stucco mesh to your walls and then apply your layers of stucco for a watertight finish.

A better solution is removing the sheathing placing lath or rigid foamboard insulation then housewrap then the wire bonding layer then the stucco. For homes with stucco exteriors a framework of wood furring strips must first be installed to create a level surface which suspends the outer layer of siding over the inner layer so that water cannot settle between the two and cause rot and erosion. The mortar itself should stick out through the netting which acts as a solid base to hold the drying mortar in place. New siding can be installed over existing exterior coverings in some cases.

You know the old fashioned way. That s where they put the foam up and they put stucco over top of the foam. Was the problem that they put new siding over old or that they put new siding over a rotted wall with no drainage plain in between. Beyond removal to assess and repair rot damage sections of the wall where stucco is bulging or otherwise out of square may need to be removed in order to get an even fastening surface for hardie board.

If i was going to stucco a house in florida i would use woven wire mesh and put a real masonry stucco on top of it. This first coat or scratch coat will give a firm base for the stucco. Installing siding over existing stucco does not give us a chance to identify underlying rot issues so if you have any concerns a full removal could be your best bet. It really stands up that way.

Stucco adorns the facade or interior walls in many homes. You can change the appearance of the stucco wall surface by covering it with a wall of siding. Placing stucco over wood sheathing is generally not considered good practice though an awful lot of contractors do it.
